Elaine A. Heath, PhD.  Founder and Friend of the Missional Wisdom Foundation

In 2008, Dr. Elaine Heath gathered a group of her students at SMU Perkins School of Theology to form innovative experiments in intentional Christian community.  Together, they launched a new monastic community of three women and a missional micro-church (New Day) that brought together seminary students and African refugees to share meals and worship God together. From those beginnings, Dr. Heath led and shaped the Missional Wisdom Foundation for seven years, innovating and challenging others to dream new dreams about the role of the church in challenging new times. In 2016, Dr. Heath concluded her work with the MWF to become Dean of Duke Divinity School, answering a lifelong call to pursue the transformation of theological education for the sake of God’s work in the world.  Dean Heath continues to be a source of inspiration and a friend to the MWF.

Dean Heath’s scholarly work integrates systematic, pastoral, and spiritual theology in ways that bridge the gap between academy, church, and world. Her research interests focus on evangelism and spirituality, evangelism and gender, the new monasticism, and the effect of emergence Christianity on church and in theological education. Heath is the author of numerous books and monographs, the most recent of which is God Unbound: Wisdom from Galatians for the Anxious Church (2016). Her other publications include Missional.Monastic.Mainline (co-authored with Larry Duggins, 2014), The Mystic Way of Evangelism  (2008), Naked Faith: The Mystical Theology of Phoebe Palmer (2009), Longing for Spring: A New Vision for Wesleyan Communities (co-authored with Scott Kisker, 2010), We Were the Least of These: Reading the Bible with Survivors of Sexual Abuse (2011), and The Gospel According to Twilight: Women, Sex, and God (2011).

There are multiple ways to be a friend of the Missional Wisdom Foundation. One of these ways is to join our Dispersed Community, which will allow access to areas of interest to community members. If you should desire a different way to be in friendship with the foundation, then you can email any member of the Lead Team: Larry Duggins, Denise Crane, Heidi Miller, or Bret Wells.
