Sabbatical: A Pilgrimage of Missional Resting and Sending

Sabbatical: A Pilgrimage of Missional Resting and Sending

Sabbatical: A Pilgrimage of Missional Resting and Sending, combines Sabbath, learning, monastic rhythms of prayer and hospitality, and service, with recreation for a two-week journey into new monastic and missional forms of church for the 21st century. The goal of the program is to provide a restful, inspiring, and renewing environment for leaders to reflect on their vocation and orient themselves toward missional ecclesiology and contemplative practice.

Sabbatical is located at Haw Creek Commons, an integrated semi-rural neighborhood ministry which combines a co-working business, an ecumenical cooperative of worshipping communities, a community garden, partnership with a local elementary school, and retreat and educational space for continuing education. In partnership with Bethesda UMC (founded 1844) and the Blue Ridge District of Western North Carolina Conference of the UMC, the Missional Wisdom Foundation repurposed the building, parsonage and campus of Bethesda to develop this vital new hub for neighborhood life. While participating in Sabbatical you will hear the story of Haw Creek Commons, meet local leaders and people from the neighborhood, and just may get to meet the family of black bears that lives near by.
