A few words about words . . .

A few words about words . . .

A major impetus behind the development of The Julian Way is the desire to offer hospitality within the fragmented and isolated existence of the disabled community.  Often marginalized or encouraged to pass as "normal," there is little opportunity or hospitable space for those who self-identify as disabled to create a communal identity built on the celebration of disability. For this reason, we use the language of "disabled families," knowing that the lived reality of families with at least one disabled member experiences disability as a family unit, even if the other members are nondisabled. But most importantly, we want to create space where disability is not a stigmatizing label, but a natural part of life lived together in community.
