What is Missional?:
Theme V, Week 1

by Andrea Lingle

What is Missional?

Missional is...

Well, missional is…

Exactly.

So, we hope to spend the next several months talking about what mission means, to us, and to you. We will discuss how being missional is not necessarily a new way but a reordering of the way. We will talk about how missional living means we cannot come to a community with an answer or a solution but with need and intention.

We will read each and every one of your responses to our survey, which we will include below for the duration of this theme.

The Missional Wisdom Foundation triquetra (try-queh’-tra) describes what being missional means. The circle of love for God, Creation, and people is embraced by the Trinity. It is a never ending, supported circle of giving and receiving love. We are told to love God and told that God loves us. We are told to care for nature and nature nourishes us. We are told to love others while receiving the love of others.

Missional means being embraced, being filled, pouring out, and knowing that each of these things will loop in endless cycles.

Missional means that we are facing outward while joined in a great cosmic circle dance. Hands grasping neighbor and Divine and shouting, “You, you there, watching. Come join us! We don’t know the steps either, but the joy is worth the risk.”

Missional means that we cannot ignore the systemic injustice we have suffered under or profited by. We must seek to forgive, understand, and repent: continually.

Missional is when ordinary Christians with busy lives and other things to do, reach out with prayer, hospitality, and justice.

Missional life is always Eucharistic life. Missional means being God’s people, gathered, forgiven, healed, blessed, and distributed to participate in God’s mission of healing and redeeming the cosmos.

Missional means “sent out.”

Invitation to Missional Mindfulness:

  • Which of these images of Missional-ism resonate with you?

  • Sit with the MWF triquetra. How does this image shape your understanding of missional?

  • Often missional life can best be expressed as love walking. How does movement shape your Christian practice? Our voices: We asked what Missional meant to you. If you would like to share your definition of Missional, please take our survey. Here is one respondent's answer. Extending God's love across a boundary (e.g. race, religion, socioeconomic, etc.)
